Rowing machine test and buying guide for the undecided

Rowing is all the rage. If you don’t want to spend your time in the gym or at a club, the best thing to do is bring your own rowing machine home. In our rowing machine test, we tested several models for different demands and compared them with each other. The comparison table summarizes our findings, the test reports describe them in great detail and the buying guide helps you to find the right rowing machine.

Rowing machine test: detailed experience reports

  • Size : With a length of 244 cm , this rowing machine is relatively long compared to others.

WaterRower S4

The WaterRower it the optically most luxurious model and the only one with a water resistance in our rowing machine test. The device is available in numerous high-quality processed woods.

Luxury rowing machine, house of cards prop, or just one of the best rowing machines in the world. Without question, it has to be the WaterRower. Its unmistakable water resistance imitates the feeling of rowing on the water in a boat. The rippling of the water is also reminiscent of real rowing and ensures the ultimate real rowing experience at home.

Often bought because of its uniquely beautiful appearance, the WaterRower looks good even when it is folded up.

We tested the WaterRower rowing machine and dedicated a separate article to it. There you will find our experiences with the rower in great detail.

Sportstech RSX500 rowing machine

This device is ideal for anyone looking for excellent value for money. It is operated with a magnetic resistance and offers numerous setting options for different workouts.

In terms of price, the Sportstech RSX500 is in the middle class. In our rowing machine test, it was recommended as an inexpensive alternative to the usual friends of Concept2 and WaterRower. Thanks to some modern features, with this machine you get a device with exciting setting and usage options.

construction

In terms of the speed of assembly, the Sportstech RSX500 rowing machine cannot keep up with the front-runner from Concept2. Too many individual parts are simply supplied for this, which have to be assembled and connected to one another.

The good thing is that the assembly instructions are easy to understand and can be carried out by anyone. With a video tutorial like the one below, it can be set up in 30 to 60 minutes without any problems.

With regard to the structure of this rowing machine, it can be said that no specialist knowledge is required, but due to the many small parts it is much more laborious than assembling the Concept2 Model D.

resistance

The resistance of the rowing machine is regulated by a magnetic brake. The resistance can be set in a total of 16 fine increments on the control unit.

However, a magnet system also means that the resistance will not regulate itself depending on how hard and how fast you are rowing.

As a result, you may have to change the resistance settings within a workout in order to set different load phases with different levels of resistance.

Sportstech RSX500 rowing machine volume

The Sportstech RSX500 rowing machine is extremely quiet due to the magnetic resistance. No hissing air or splashing water to increase the volume.

For noisy apartments with flatmates or children, a device like this one with magnetic resistance could be the right and best choice.

Control / performance monitor

The performance monitor of the RSX500 is surprisingly large and offers a wide range of functions. A total of 5 user profiles allow several people to row on the device.

The control console display shows the time spent rowing:

  • 1
    Time or time / 500m
  • 2
    Rowed distance
  • 3
Strokes per minute (number of strokes)
  • 4th
Total Strokes (total number of strokes)
  • 5
    Calories Consumed
  • 6th
    Heart rate
  • 7th
    Program selection
  • 8th
    Profile selection
  • 9
    Training display
  • 10
    Resistance and mode setting

The console also has a USB charging port and is compatible with the heart rate belt supplied.

A particular highlight of the rowing machine, however, is the option to connect and control the console with a tablet or smartphone.

More on this in the next point.

USB connectivity

The console has a USB charging port and can be controlled using a tablet or smartphone. The device has a tablet holder and its own fitness app that can be used to operate the device.

The app contains a selection of programs and recordings of the training progress.

If you want to read the performance level and the measured values during training, you should use a tablet. A cell phone is too small to decipher the data during exercise.

Longevity and workmanship

The rowing machine is designed for a maximum load of 120 kg. Once set up, it makes a valuable impression and even when rowing it feels as if it is not a device in this price range.

In our rowing machine test, we could not find any defects in the processing quality.

Since we have not subjected the product to a long-term test, we cannot make a final judgment on its longevity.

There have been a few complaints that the track’s running wheels do not run properly. The manufacturer always makes an effort to respond to such reviews and offers an exchange or return of the devices on its own initiative – very exemplary!

Rowing feeling and comfort

The rowing feeling of the Sportstech RSX500 rowing machine is good – no question about it.

In our opinion, the magnetic resistance does not come close to the natural, self-regulating feeling of water or air resistance, but strenuous workouts can still be carried out with a low noise level.

Seat and rail

The seat is semicircular to make your buttocks as comfortable as possible. For our part, we find the four castors on the single-rail barrel to be absolutely sufficient for a safe and even seating experience

Rowing movement

The resistance when rowing is constant throughout the movement and therefore does not imitate the natural resistance of the paddle in the water. Rowers who are used to the feeling of being in the boat may therefore find it a little more difficult to switch.

For home trainers who want to get the maximum performance out of their home workout for as little money as possible, the difference will certainly not be significant.

Required space and storage space

Another advantage of a magnetic rowing machine is that it takes up less space. The operating dimensions of 201.5 x 57 x 83 cm can even be set up in smaller apartments and rooms where space is limited. Although the total length is just around 2 meters, the rowing machine in the test is suitable for people who are also around 2 meters tall.

When folded, the rail is adjusted in height, which is why the device can be stowed very compactly. Dimensions of 79 x 57 x 154.5 cm can be found quickly in a small niche.

The storage dimensions correspond roughly to those of the Concept2 rowing machine.

  •
Air resistance: The resistance system is set variably. The harder and faster you row, the greater the resistance to be overcome. Ideal for different workouts and performance levels.
  •
Simple assembly: Assembly is easy by hand. The necessary tools are included in the scope of delivery and only eight screws have to be attached so that the device is stable and secure.
  •
Quality: Concept2’s rowing machines are made in the USA. The company’s headquarters are in Vermont, where tours of the assembly halls are also offered.
  •
Heart rate data : With a compatible chest strap, your own heart rate can be displayed in real time on the monitor.
  •
Performance Monitoring : The latest generation of the Performance Monitor is really unique. It is easy to use and offers a variety of measurements and settings. Special highlights are the different racing and game modes, the recording via USB stick and the possibility of coupling it with the mobile phone.
  •
Adjustable Footpegs: The rowing machine’s footpegs are adjustable to accommodate a variety of shoe sizes.
  •
Easy storage: no tools are required to set up the machine for storage. The space required is drastically reduced when folded.
  •
Low seat: The seat is only around 35 cm from the floor and gives you a real rowing feeling.
  •
Transport wheels : Castors on the front of the rowing machine make it easier to move and maneuver the machine. This also simplifies dismantling.
  •
Slides: So-called slides are available separately for the Concept2 Model D. This allows the rowing machine to be converted into a “rowing boat” on land. Several Concept2 rowing machines can be linked to the slides for team training.
  •
Long warranty: The Concept2 Model D is covered by a five-year warranty on the frame and a two-year warranty on moving parts.

Weaknesses and possible suggestions for improvement:

  •
Size : With a length of 244 cm , this rowing machine is relatively long compared to others.

Is there a rowing machine test by Stiftung Warentest?

Unfortunately, there is currently no rowing machine test by the Stiftung Warentest.

It would be desirable if the popular institution would publish a rowing machine test in the future. Although safety risks are almost impossible with the machines, it would be helpful to see how the machines from the market leaders can withstand continuous use. It would also be exciting to know how serious the differences between the individual price classes are in this regard.

Rowing machine buying guide

If you want to do more for your general fitness and endurance, you should definitely consider purchasing a rowing machine. Even if you don’t really show any real interest in rowing, it is used again and again in every fitness studio. But not everyone would like to accept the costs and travel times to a fitness studio and also does not always have the time for extensive fitness training.

W hich factors when purchasing a roll of the rowing machine?

In the following we have prepared some aspects for you about buying a rowing machine. This allows you to find the optimal rowing machine for you that meets your personal sports goals and wishes.

Your budget

Rowing machines can vary enormously in price, depending on style, quality, features and ease of use.

While there are very simple models on the market from around 80 euros, you pay up to 2,000 euros for a device from the professional athlete area. If you know your budget, you can already drastically reduce the number of different models.

Here it comes down to the best price / performance ratio – i.e. rowing machines that offer good quality at an affordable price.

Many negative reviews about rowing machines come from buyers who opted for the cheaper model but expected the quality of the more expensive model. But even in the world of rowing machines, you get what you pay for.

The available space

The decisive factor for the size of the rowing machine is primarily the space that is available for it.

After time-consuming research, finding the perfect rowing machine and then realizing that there isn’t enough space to use it at all makes little sense.

A typical rowing machine is roughly the same size as a classic couch.

Especially in the case of more expensive models, the size increases, as more generously dimensioned seat rails are often used. Especially for tall people with correspondingly long legs, a rowing machine with a seat that is not too tightly calculated provides a pleasant level of comfort in contrast to more compact rowing machine models.

Before you decide on a rowing machine, it is essential to measure the corresponding room in which the training machine will later be positioned. In order not to have to row in the corner or between the table and the wall during regular training , plan a little more space.

Resistance types

The different types of resistance and what strengths and weaknesses they have

Rowing machines are available with four different resistance systems.

These operate either with water, air, a magnetic brake or hydraulic piston.

Each system has its own characteristics with advantages and disadvantages.

In modern training equipment, air resistance is usually used, which is made use of by a ribbed flywheel. The actual mechanics of “rowing” are always the same.

Water resistance

The so-called “Water Rower” models work, as the name suggests, with water resistance and come realistically close to real rowing. In some rowing machines, for example, a rowing pull raises a certain amount of water and thus creates resistance.

In other rowing machine models, the pulling resistance is generated by a paddle in the water drum. This paddle often makes a lot of noise, but it can also be heard when rowing properly outdoors.

Water resistance machines are the most expensive rowing machines of all resistance types.

 Air resistance

In a rowing machine with an integrated wind turbine, a certain volume of air resistance is displaced with each pull. It’s the type of resistance most commonly used in gyms.

If you choose a very high resistance setting, more air will be transported into the wind turbine – your pull will be much stronger. In this way, the resistance can be infinitely varied and is also available in an almost unlimited manner.

Incidentally, with such a model, one or the other fitness fan will find the expelled air very pleasant.

Magnetic brake

In such rowing machines, the resistance is regulated by electric or permanent magnets. The setting of the individual pulling resistances is very comfortable and the rowing experience is generally classified as very smooth and rounded. The resistance is sometimes less than that of air or water.

However, if you are rowing slowly, you may still feel a lot of resistance on magnetic rowing machines as opposed to air or water.

These models are also very durable and require virtually no maintenance.

The special thing about this type of rowing machine is that there are also mixed forms that use a combination of air and magnetic resistance.

Hydraulic resistance

Hydraulic resistance is often used, especially in rowing machines in the lower price segment. Here the rowing machines use a hydraulically operated piston to generate the desired pulling force.

The resistances are usually not adjusted continuously, but adjusted by a kind of clamp or lever. This type is usually very compact and easy to store when not in use.

The disadvantage compared to the system with air resistance is the lack of feeling of rowing with this variant. This can lead to irregular, jerky movements instead of even pulling during training.

Other factors

As already mentioned, depending on the resistance system, there is also a certain level of noise when rowing, which can also be a decisive factor in the purchase.

Most prospective buyers, however, are primarily influenced by the individual technology. Each rowing machine has a training computer for analyzing the training-relevant data, which differ depending on the equipment and price of the rowing machine. The typical computer displays data such as time, number of strokes, distance and speed.

Demanding devices also have a heart rate monitor connection as well as USB or Bluetooth connections and can thus transfer additional training programs. Exercise programs make it easier to train for specific goals in terms of stroke count, calorie consumption, time and much more.

Guarantee of the rowing machines

The warranty period for rowing machines is also a factor in buying, because like any fitness machine, a rowing machine also contains a lot of technical components and is not exactly cheap.

A distinction is made between three areas: the frame, the additional parts and the resistance system. It is very unlikely that the steering gear frame or drag system will break. But if it does happen, you should be covered by a guarantee for the first few years.

The warranty period for additional parts is generally rather short, but additional parts such as cables or similar usually last a long time.

A guarantee period of three years generally speaks for a good quality of the rowing machines.

Frequently asked questions about rowing machines

Rowing machine – cable pull or boom?

The question of whether a rope hoist is better than a boom can only be answered individually. Both versions have the following advantages and disadvantages.

Rowing machines with rope pull: advantages and disadvantages

The rowing machines with cable pull are the ones that you will mainly encounter in the fitness studios. The big advantage of these devices is that they are much easier to use. You pull a handle with both hands, which distributes the load evenly and almost eliminates operating errors, if you disregard the sources of error when adjusting the foot holder, the so-called stretcher board.

A major disadvantage of this version is that the devices are relatively expensive. There are apparently cheap offers, but there you pay for this price advantage with a significantly lower quality. The wearing parts quickly bend their knees, which quickly and significantly limits their usability. It is therefore worthwhile to invest properly right from the start so that you can enjoy it over the long term.

Boom rowing machines: advantages and disadvantages

Alternatively, there are versions with a boom. These feel most similar to rowing on the water, as you have two separate oars in your hand. The devices also require less space in the home than comparable rope pull devices and are much cheaper to buy. However, these devices with the two individual trains also have their disadvantages.

The coordination of movements and the handling of the two trains are more difficult to learn and always involve the risk of incorrect strain on the muscles and joints. If you are still a beginner, you should rather use the rowing machines with cable pull, if you have already used the rowing movement sequence safely, then the outriggers would be a cheap option for you

Adjust the rowing machine correctly

We briefly mentioned that the only major source of error would be the adjustment of the stretcher with the rowing machines with cable pull. And now I would like to go into a little more detail. The essential part, on which you have to adjust your settings, are the loops with which you fix your feet on the stretcher. It is important that the loops are passed over the feet just below the toes at the base of the toes. The soles on the stretcher are easy to adjust, you just have to pull them up or push them down. Until the loops are in the right position for you.

Little tricks for the correct adjustment of the stretcher

The taller you are, the further down you have to adjust the stretcher sole and the smaller you are, the further up. But there are other criteria that you should use as a guideline. If, as a taller person, you adjust the sole too far down and thus also move your legs down compared to the seat height, it is possible that your buttocks lift slightly off the seat during the eccentric part of the rowing movement. This happens especially when you do really intensive training sessions. So if you lift off something with your buttocks, you should move the sole up one step.

If you set the stretcher board too high, your legs may get in the way again and again when you move the boom. This also happens if you are basically a little more immobile in the joints. You should then simply move the sole one step down, this should solve the problems and set the rowing machine correctly again.

Rowing machine vs treadmill vs stationary bike

The rowing machine has a number of advantages over other fitness equipment such as a treadmill and stationary bike. For example, there is no overloading of the knee and ankle joints, which you have to pay attention to when using the treadmill, and when rowing the entire upper body, including your back and arms, is significantly more stressed than when rowing. Rowing works around 80 percent of all your muscles. The sequence of movements can be learned relatively easily and quickly and you can control the load very freely and flexibly. So it is a very good tip for you to use a rowing machine as a home trainer.

Does the rowing machine make sense at home?

Even if it sounds a bit suspect and paradoxical. Rowing can serve you well both in preventing and treating back pain. The even movement that rowing brings with it enables an even strain on the muscles. The entire upper and deeper muscle area is tightened here, the muscle cells are strengthened and trained even more.

But of course all of this only works if you have mastered the technique of rowing properly. This also means that you warm up the back muscles properly by bending the torso and doing gymnastics. When you warm up, the circulation is also stimulated and the important joints (feet, knees, hips) should definitely be integrated into the warm-up.

What does the rowing machine do against back pain?

When it comes to technique, it is particularly important to maintain a straight sitting position with regard to the back. You should avoid excessive curvature of the back or overstretching backwards when moving the boom. After all, all of the power should come out of the arms. The back muscles only support the arms when pulling.

But basically, with the right technique and the right amount of intensity, you can’t offer your back any better home-based training than rowing. If, in spite of everything, you are unsure, especially if you have ever had a “back”, ask your orthopedic surgeon whether he thinks you are fit enough. Using the rowing machine against back pain is always possible if you have no structural damage to the spine, but only muscular shortening or tension. The very freely variable load control and the fairly easy to learn technique make the rowing machine one of the best strength endurance machines for everyone who

Our conclusion

The criteria for buying a rowing machine are very different and depend on how relevant they are for the purchase decision.

In addition to size and price, the type of resistance, scope of the training computer and even the warranty period can play a role here. With four different resistance systems you have an optimal selection for your perfect rowing feeling. Our rowing machine test will help you to find the right model for you.

For more fitness in everyday life, a rowing machine is definitely a good choice!
