We don’t examine multi-purpose machines very often; either it’s a rowing machine or it’s not in our opinion. Plus, when developing a piece of equipment to accomplish the work of two, compromises are common. However, after receiving numerous emails requesting that we look into it, we decided to make an exception. So, here’s what we’ve come up with.
Please note that the majority of this evaluation is to the rower and not its other forms. Also, if you decide to order one of these, you’ll need two people to be home when it arrives. The machine itself is quite hefty, weighing in at over 100 pounds (with a shipping weight of 104 pounds). If you plan on using the machine upstairs, think about how you’ll get it there, or disassemble it and transfer it separately. When folded, however, the transport wheels make it easy to transfer once in position.
Depending on your DIY skills, assembling the device could take up to 2 hours, and a lot of our reviewers complained that parts were missing or that the directions in the package were incorrect.
Now it’s time to get down to business with the actual rower. When you first sit in the seat, you’ll notice that it’s not very comfortable. It’s not encouraging to learn it’s not what it should be if you’re going to be sitting on it for 30 minutes or more. When spending around $800, you might add a little layer of foam or a cushion, but this isn’t really necessary.
The magnetic resistance mechanism is relatively smooth and silent. It includes eight difficulty levels, however one reviewer felt that the top level wasn’t difficult enough. Turning a knob beneath the display unit changes the resistance. The rowing handle is adequate, if a touch thin for larger hands. It has a cloth strap instead of a chain. This reduces noise and is excellent for mild to moderate users, but if you plan to use the machine for frequent, strenuous workouts, these so-called heavy duty textiles will quickly wear out.
The movement is satisfactory, but if you weigh more than 190 pounds, you may find it a little bumpy. If you’re taller than 5′ 10″, the rail may be too short, preventing you from reaching full extension at the end of the stroke. The machine seems strong and doesn’t move at higher stroke rates, which you’d expect from a model that weighs as much as this one does :0)
After a few months (and, as luck would have it, after the 90-day warranty period! ), some of our consumers claimed that plastic pieces developed cracks. Others, on the other hand, claim that their machines are still running smoothly after six months.
The footrests are wide and in a good position, and the straps will keep your feet secure when rowing. It’s surprising how many rowers are let down by the foot restraints, especially considering they’re such an important part of the machine – you can’t row if your feet fall loose!
Even in low light, the display screen and numbers are large and simple to read. It shows you all you need to know about your workout – visit our guide to workout statistics for more information.
The controls are simple and easy to figure out without consulting the handbook. It does show your pulse rate while you’re riding a recumbent bike with the handlebars on the saddle, but not when you’re rowing.
Stamina deserves credit for seeking to bring low-cost fitness equipment into the home. The Conversion II is a good equipment for those with little finances who want to work out at home. It will provide you with a mix of cardiovascular and resistance workouts, allowing you to tone up and possibly drop a few pounds. However, as a rower, it has its limitations and does not provide much value for the money.
One major letdown is the 90-day guarantee on all parts, which is far less than what should be expected for a product of this price. Here’s a rundown of what to anticipate from warranties.
